Building Workplace Essential Skills Online - Update
(October 27, 2004) - In response to HRSDC's initiative to provide alternative
ways of delivering essential skills training in Canada, Bow Valley College
is adapting their existing Building Workplace Essential Skills classroom
course for online delivery. The curriculum covers Reading Text, Document
Use and Numeracy and will be highly interactive and fully articulated with
TOWES.
The project continues to progress. The curriculum development team has
been diligently designing the curriculum, which is comprised of a series
highly interactive lessons and practice exercises to be delivered through
the WebCT online learning environment. A database is also being developed
in order to provide learners each with an individualized learning plan
and to enable instructors to track learner progress. Due to the complexity
of developing this database, we have had to bring in a new server to support
this product. This and a few other technical bumps along the road have
meant delaying the launch of the field study originally planned for October
2004.
There continues to be a swell of interest and enthusiasm in anticipation
of the release of this product. We hope to pilot the course with 8 partners
across Canada in February of 2005 and will continue to provide progress
updates on this exciting project.
