Essential Skills go online
TOWES is preparing for the official launch this Fall of Essential Skills Online (ESO).
ESO is a fully interactive, online essential skills curriculum designed to help learners assess and improve their Essential Skills.
ESO was developed by Bow Valley College in partnership with Human Resources & Social Development Canada (HRSDC) to aid new Canadians in improving their Essential Skills. Through a national pilot project, the ESO curriculum was tested by more than 150 individuals.
Eight organizations from across Canada participated in this project: John Abbot College, Seneca College, Durham College, Conestoga College, Sheridan College, Bow Valley College, Douglas College, and Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers.
ESO is designed for anyone who needs to improve their reading text, document use, or numeracy skills. Authentic workplace documents, representing more than 100 Canadian occupations are used to teach strategies for solving problems and completing tasks in the context of the Canadian workplace.
ESO makes testing easier! The curriculum can be delivered in a facilitated classroom setting, independently, or in a blended delivery model. ESO learners can navigate the curriculum at their own pace, follow a learning plan customized to their occupational requirements and goals, receive instant feedback, and gauge their progress with practice assessments.
Developing and practising essential skills is a key part of preparing for the Canadian workplace and ESO is only the beginning. Learners who successfully master these workplace literacy skills will be that much further along a path to continued success.
